By now, most employers required to file an Employer Information Report EEO-1 (known as the EEO-1 Report) with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission should have received 2015 EEO-1 filing materials in the mail. Letters are typically mailed beginning in mid-July, as the deadline for filing the survey is September 30, 2015. The EEO-1 Report is a compliance survey report that is mandated by federal statute and requires company employment data to be categorized by race or ethnicity, gender, and job category.

Companies required to file the report are those that are:

  1. Subject to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, with 100 or more employees;
  2. Subject to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, with fewer than 100 employees if the company is owned by or corporately affiliated with another company and the entire enterprise employs a total of 100 or more employees; or
  3. Federal government prime contractors or first-tier subcontractors subject to Executive Order 11246, as amended, with 50 or more employees and a prime contact or first-tier subcontract amounting to $50,000 or more.

The preferred method for completing the EEO-1 reports is the web-based filing system, as paper EEO-1 forms are typically only generated by request in extreme cases where Internet access is not available to the employer.

Data collected through the survey has been used by both the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs since 1966 to support civil rights enforcement and determine which employer facilities to select for compliance evaluations.
