Coordination of Benefits

Coordination of benefits (COB) refers to the way in which individuals are insured when they have more than one health care plan. For instance, if both you and your spouse elect coverage through both of your employers, you technically have two health care plan providers. In this circumstance, one plan is considered to be the primary carrier and covers a majority of your expenses. The secondary plan then covers any remaining allowable expenses that are not covered by the primary plan.
